The humpback whale is one of the largest animals on Earth, growing to lengthsfrom 14–17 m (46–56 ft) and weigh up to 40 metric tons (44 short tons) and can live up to 80-90 years. Like whale sharks and basking sharks they too filter feed for tiny krill or small pelagic fishes and are totally harmless to people. These whales are known for their singing that can be heard up to 20 miles away to attract females. Humpback whales have some of the longest migrations of any mammal with some populations swimming 5,000 miles (8,047 km) between breeding and feeding grounds. Populations that migrate between Alaska and Hawaii can complete the 3,000-mile (4,828 km) trip in just 36 days.
